Reading the descriptions of some of the animals: much thoughtful observations and care went into those description- it is heart warming to read them all and see what great attention these stray and abandoned pets looking for a new life are getting. It comes from England circa 1824 i think. Then the states circa 1860s I think.  In england, a reverend put the spca foundations together. The first spca in Montreal appeared and was founded around 1869.
