This is the second cat that dies younger than 5 years old on us in 30 years and 5 cats.

That would be because we let them go outside. I think we should revisit Hardy's lifestyle and keep him indoor and outdoor only under supervision right there with him. We may seriously need a mouser generally every spirng and autumn,  so he must be protected at all costs.
